Others do not fail to jump into just because it seems so complicated as hell exactly where many things can happen – and things do not always good! The Pros And Cons Of Using Betting Firms To Trade Forex

There are many ways to trade forex these days. For example you can use a traditional forex broker or you can use a spread betting company. However we are now seeing a lot of bookmakers getting in on the act as well, and you can now bet on the currency markets with a number of different bookies online.

There are two main advantages. First of all any profits that you make are generally free of tax. This is certainly the case in the UK at least, although this is obviously not the case in many countries.

Secondly they offer a wide range of intraday markets, and are therefore ideal for short term traders. For instance a lot of bookmakers offer 2 minute, 5 minute, 1 hour and daily markets, and you can bet on the price being above or below a certain level or within certain price ranges at the end of each period.

Unfortunately there are a few drawbacks as well. The

Survey: Banks still charge high overdraft fees

Overdraft fees at banks continue to remain high despite Federal Reserve rules that require banks to get permission from customers to charge overdraft fees on debit card transactions. And although some banks have changed the order in which they process overdraft payments from checking accounts, most continued to pay the largest transactions first, according to a recent Consumer Federation of America (CFA) report.

“Bank overdraft fees at the largest banks remain steep, ranging from $33 to $37, and far exceed the typical $20 debit card overdraft,” said Jean Ann Fox, CFA’s director of financial services. “Some banks have hiked the number of overdraft fees consumers can rack up in a single day to as many as ten, costing consumers as much as $370 in just one day.”

The survey found that two-thirds of the largest banks add on additional fees if overdrafts are not repaid in a few days. Customers

Monday Map: Growth of Property Taxes by State

Today’s Monday Map looks at the growth of property taxes between 2009 and 2010. The basic metric we use to judge property tax levels is the median real estate tax divided by the median home value. This figure more than doubled in Louisiana, rising over 140% (though it should be said that Louisiana still ranked lowest overall in 2009, and only jumped to 3rd lowest for 2010.) North Dakota and Indiana are the only two states that saw a decrease.

Emerging Market Currencies Brace for Correction

“It was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair,” begins Charles Dickens’ The Tale of Two Cities. In 2011, the winter of despair was followed by the spring of uncertainty. Due to the earthquake/tsunami in Japan, the continued tribulations of Greece, rising commodity prices, and growing concern over the global economic recovery, volatility in the forex markets has risen, and investors are unclear as to how to proceed. For now at least, they are responding by dumping emerging market currencies.

As you can see from the chart above (which shows a cross-section of emerging market forex), most currencies peaked in the beginning of May and have since sold-off significantly. If not for the rally that started off the year, all emerging market currencies would probably be down for the year-to-date, and in fact many of them are anyway. Still

Next week’s earnings releases

We are still a few weeks away from the Q3 earnings season, which starts as per tradition with Alcoa on 12 October after-market. Hence next week’s list is short with Hennes & Mauritz among the few big companies to report. Consensus looks for H&M EPS (adjusted) to decline to SEK 2.029 from 2.572 in Q2 and 2.564 in Q3’10. Sales are also expected to 26.8 billion from 27.6 a quarter ago. The list can be found here.

Consolidation before the Fed but Positioning Shows Markets Bearish on EUR

The euro bounced off of its lows for the day despite S&P downgrading the credit rating of Italy. Today’s price action may be seen as a consolidation with markets awaiting results from the Fed’s meeting. Market players may be looking for further EUR declines as speculators have built their largest position against the EUR since early August.

The majors have been unable to find direction today as many participants are eyeing tomorrow’s FOMC statement. Expectations are for some form of “Operation Twist” with the likeliest path being the Fed purchasing US Treasuries at the long end of the curve using the proceeds from the maturing MBS the Fed holds on its balance sheet. This could be a positive for the USD if the Fed goes this route versus an expansion of the Fed’s balance sheet. This stands in contrast to the ECB, BOJ and BOE who are likely to increase their balance sheets in the near term.
